What are the best video doorbells for detecting package deliveries?
Package detection depends on two things spec sheets often blur: whether the camera can see the ground in front of your door, and whether the alert is included or sits behind a subscription.

The quick answer: Our pick for package alerts without a monthly fee is the Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen), $199.99. Google includes package alerts at no extra cost, and its square 1:1 frame and 166° diagonal view are, by Google's description, its widest and tallest yet. The trade-off is history: without Google Home Premium, it keeps six hours of short previews. If you want weeks of recordings stored locally with no subscription, the dual-camera eufy Video Doorbell E340 is the better fit; Ring doorbells need a Ring Protect plan for package alerts.
What decides whether a doorbell catches a delivery
- The package has to be in frame. Google's package alerts guide says detection works best when a package of at least 8.5 × 11 × 1 inches sits still in view for a short time. A taller frame or a second, downward camera helps.
- The alert may cost extra. Google includes package alerts on the Nest Doorbell (battery), (wired, 2nd gen) and (wired, 3rd gen). Ring lists package alerts as part of its paid plans.
- You need to look back far enough. If you check after work, a few hours of previews may not reach the delivery.
- Power and installation. The wired Nest model needs a 16–24VAC, 10–40VA doorbell transformer and a chime; battery models avoid that.

Where the Nest Doorbell fits — and where it doesn't
Choose the Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) when you want package alerts without paying monthly and already have doorbell wiring. Google's support page says it notifies you when a package is seen and when it is no longer seen, which also flags a pickup. The product page lists 2K HDR video, which Google says needs at least 3.3 Mbps. Premium Standard, $10 a month or $100 a year, adds 30 days of event history and familiar-face alerts; Advanced adds Gemini event descriptions and 24/7 video.
Choose the Nest Doorbell (battery) when you rent or lack wiring. Package alerts are also included, but the frame is 3:4 and the view narrower.
Consider the eufy Video Doorbell E340 instead when you want evidence kept without a subscription. eufy says its 8 GB of local storage holds up to 60 days of event recordings, and its second camera faces down toward the floor in front of the door. Thumbnail notifications briefly pass through eufy's cloud.
Consider Ring when you already use Ring devices. Its subscription guide says recorded video needs a plan; without one you get live view and real-time alerts. The Solo plan covers one device with up to 180 days of video playback.
Know the limits of any detector. Google says detection range can shrink in the dark, several packages arriving together may trigger one notification, and Home/Away Assist can switch the camera off while you are home.
A worked example: three years of package alerts
Illustrative assumptions: one front door, US list prices, annual billing, no promotions.
- Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen), no plan: $199.99. Package alerts included; six hours of previews.
- Same doorbell with Premium Standard: $199.99 + 3 × $100 = $499.99 for 30 days of history.
- eufy Video Doorbell E340: $149.99, with up to 60 days stored locally.
- Ring with the Solo plan: 3 × $49.99 = $149.97 in plan fees, plus the doorbell.
The cheapest route depends on how far back you need to look, not only on the alert.
Checklist before you decide
- Check your wiring first. Confirm your transformer meets 16–24VAC and 10–40VA before choosing the wired Nest model.
- Mark the drop zone. Stand where couriers leave parcels and confirm the doorbell's view covers that spot.
- Decide how far back you need to look. Hours of previews, 30 days in the cloud and 60 days locally are different products.
- Turn off away-only camera modes if needed. Google says continuous package detection requires turning off Home/Away Assist for the doorbell.
- Count the plan in the price. For Ring, add the plan's yearly fee to the doorbell's cost.
Common questions
Do Nest doorbells need a subscription for package alerts?
No. Google says package alerts are available at no additional cost on the Nest Doorbell (battery), (wired, 2nd gen) and (wired, 3rd gen). Other Nest cameras that support package alerts need Google Home Premium.
Will it tell me when a package is picked up?
Google says Nest doorbells notify you when a package is seen and when it is no longer seen. eufy says its package-event footage shows when parcels were delivered or collected.
Why might a small parcel at night not trigger an alert?
Google sets a minimum package size of 8.5 × 11 × 1 inches and says detection distance can be shorter in low light. Place packages within view and add porch lighting where possible.
Take this with you: Pick the doorbell whose view covers your drop zone, then decide how much history you will pay for; package alerts themselves are included on current Nest doorbells.
Next step: Run the doorbell compatibility check linked from Google's Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) page, then photograph your doorstep from the doorbell's height to confirm the drop zone is visible.
